March break, spring break and relâche are the same school holiday with different names: March break in Ontario and Nova Scotia, spring break in BC and Alberta, and the semaine de relâche in Québec.
The Ministry of Education sets March break for every publicly funded board, so TDSB, Peel, York Region, Ottawa-Carleton and Toronto Catholic all break March 15 to 19, 2027 and return on March 22. The Ministry's published dates for 2028 are March 13 to 17. First and last days and PA days are set by each board: Ottawa-Carleton starts on September 1, while TDSB, Peel, York Region and Toronto Catholic start on September 8.
Québec has no ministry-wide calendar. Each centre de services scolaire publishes its own, and the Montréal, Laval, Québec City and Lanaudière centres we checked all schedule the relâche for March 1 to 5, 2027, with classes resuming March 8. Of the five provinces on this page, it is the earliest March break. Schools also set their own pedagogical days, so check your school's calendar.
BC school districts set their own spring break. Surrey schedules March 15 to 19, then closure days March 22 to 25. Vancouver and Burnaby break March 15 to 25, and Coquitlam March 15 to 29. All four reopen on March 30, after Good Friday (March 26) and Easter Monday (March 29), so students are out for about two weeks.
Alberta boards choose their own week. Calgary Board of Education's break is March 20 to 29, Edmonton Catholic's Easter and spring break is March 25 to April 2, and Edmonton Public's is March 30 to April 2. Boards outside these three differ again, so confirm with yours before you book.
The Department of Education sets one calendar for every regional centre for education: spring break March 8 to 12, 2027, within a school term that runs from September 1, 2026 to June 30, 2027. Halifax (HRCE) also lists March 5 as a no-class day for elementary, middle and junior schools only.
March break 2027 in Ontario is Monday, March 15 to Friday, March 19, with classes resuming on Monday, March 22. The Ministry of Education sets this week for publicly funded boards, so TDSB, Peel, York Region, Ottawa-Carleton and Toronto Catholic all share it. The Ministry's published date for 2028 is March 13 to 17.
The relâche scolaire in Québec is March 1 to 5, 2027 for the Montréal, Laval, Québec City and Lanaudière school service centres we checked. Classes resume on March 8. Québec has no ministry-wide calendar, so each centre de services scolaire publishes its own and your school may add its own pedagogical days.
BC school districts set their own dates. Surrey's spring break is March 15 to 19, followed by closure days to March 25, while Vancouver and Burnaby run March 15 to 25 and Coquitlam March 15 to 29. In all four districts schools reopen on March 30, after Good Friday and Easter Monday, so students are out for about two weeks.
Alberta has no common date. Calgary Board of Education's spring break is March 20 to 29, Edmonton Catholic's Easter and spring break is March 25 to April 2, and Edmonton Public's is March 30 to April 2. Boards outside these three differ again, so check your own board's calendar before you book.
Spring break in Nova Scotia is March 8 to 12, 2027. The provincial Department of Education sets one calendar for every regional centre for education, with the school term running from September 1, 2026 to June 30, 2027. Individual schools such as year-round or adult programs can follow a different calendar.
Not always. Ontario and Nova Scotia set one week for the whole province. Québec, BC and Alberta leave it to boards, and many link the break to Easter, which falls on March 28, 2027. Even inside a board, balanced or year-round schools can follow another calendar, so confirm with your child's school.
They are the same school holiday with different names. Ontario and Nova Scotia call it March break, BC and Alberta call it spring break, and Québec calls it the semaine de relâche. The length differs more than the name: one week in Ontario, Québec and Nova Scotia, and often two weeks in BC and Alberta where it joins Easter.
Many Canadian families travel in the same week, so flights and resort rooms for March break are in demand. Choose your dates as soon as your board's calendar is confirmed, then compare packages across providers. Set a price alert for your dates so you hear when prices move.
