About Cozumel
Cozumel is an island in the Mexican Caribbean, across a channel from Playa del Carmen in the state of Quintana Roo. Its reefs, many inside a national marine park, draw divers and snorkellers, most resorts sit along the calmer west coast north and south of the town of San Miguel, and the windward east coast is wild and largely undeveloped. Cozumel International Airport (CZM) is on the island; some packages fly into Cancún instead.
Canadian vacation packages to Cozumel combine a return flight and a resort stay. Several travel sites sell the same resorts, so the total for identical dates can differ from one site to the next. TripRadr shows those totals side by side, and you book on the site you prefer.
Best time to visit
Cozumel is warm all year. The dry season runs roughly from December to April, and the hotter, wetter months bring the Atlantic hurricane season, roughly June to November. Here is what to expect:
Dry season
Sunny days, clear water for diving and the busiest travel season. Book early for school holidays.
Warm and quieter
Hotter days and fewer travellers than in winter. Hurricane season begins in June.
Hot summer
Hot and humid, with calm seas on many days and summer-holiday travel.
Wetter months
More rain and the height of hurricane season. Read the change and cancellation terms.
Things to do
Join a boat trip into the marine park, or snorkel from shore at one of the west-coast beach clubs.
Walk the waterfront and the main plaza in the island's only town, with shops and seafood restaurants.
Rent a car or scooter to follow the road along the island's wild, windswept eastern shore.
Visit San Gervasio, a Mayan site in the island's interior once linked to the goddess Ixchel.
Travel tips
Canadians need a valid passport to visit Mexico. Check the current entry rules and your passport validity before you travel.
Some packages fly into Cozumel and others into Cancún, which adds a road transfer and the ferry. Check the flight before you book.
Follow your guide's instructions in the marine park, don't touch the coral, and use reef-friendly sunscreen.
The east coast has strong currents in places. Swim on the calmer west side or where it is marked as safe.
