Amex Platinum FAQs
How much is the Platinum Card annual fee in Canada?
The basic card costs $799 a year. Additional Platinum Cards cost $250 each, and the first two additional Gold Cards are free, then $50 each. Weigh the fee against the credits and benefits you would actually use.
What credits does the Platinum Card include?
American Express lists a $200 annual travel credit and a $200 annual dining credit at a curated list of Canadian restaurants. It also lists up to $240 in Instacart credits within 12 months, until 2027-12-31, and a NEXUS fee credit of up to $100. Each credit has its own conditions, so read them before counting them toward the fee.
Does the Platinum Card have a foreign transaction fee?
Yes. American Express charges a 2.5% foreign currency commission on purchases in other currencies. That adds up on long international trips, so a no-fee card may be a better everyday card abroad.
What lounge access does the Platinum Card give?
It includes access to the American Express Global Lounge Collection, which American Express describes as 1,550+ lounges in 500+ airports. From 2027-01-01, complimentary Plaza Premium and Priority Pass visits are limited each year unless you reach $20,000 in eligible spending in a calendar year. Other lounges in the collection stay unlimited.
Is the Platinum Card worth it for occasional travellers?
Usually not, because the fee is high and the benefits reward frequent use. Add up the credits, lounge visits and hotel perks you would really use in a year and compare the total with $799. If the gap is small, a lower-fee card is simpler.
